OVERVIEW

  • Notes

This play was written to form the core of a weeklong theatre residency in special schools. The play explores a range of issues such as manners, acceptable behaviour, focus and a sense of belonging. The play is also suitable for all young people between 5-9 years.

  • Synopsis

Bertha is the eldest sister of a large family and is always in charge. Her best friend is Smelly the Monster who nobody else can see. Smelly won't behave. He creates messes at home and at school, and Bertha always takes the blame. When her class gets double double double homework because of Smelly's invisible behaviour, however, Bertha has had enough. At her Dad's suggestion she begins to teach the monster manners so that Smelly becomes a very well-behaved monster. As he does so, he even becomes visible, making new friends and getting to star in the school play.
