| Conor McPherson was born in Dublin in 1971. He attended UCD where he began to write and direct plays for the college Dramsoc. On leaving college he was involved with the setting up of Fly By Night Theatre Company in 1992, the company that went on to produce many of his early plays. His numerous awards include the Stewart Parker award, Meyer Whitworth award and the George Devine Award (both for 'St Nicholas', 1997),the Olivier Award for Best Play, the Evening Standard award and the Critic's circle award (all for 'The Weir', 1999) and for his hit film 'I Went Down' the Best Screenplay award, Best New Director award and a jury prize at the San Sebastian film festival. His 2004 play 'Shining City' was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2006. His plays have been produced on the West End and Broadway and have been translated into several European languages. Earlier works by Conor McPherson include 'Taking Stock' (1989), 'Michelle Pfeiffer; (1990) and 'Scenes Federal' (1991). All three plays were produced by DramSoc at University College Dublin. They have never been produced professionally and are therefore not included in the Irish Playography. |
