Micheál Mac Liammóir
1899 - 1978
Micheal MacLiammóir (born Alfred Willmore) was an actor, designer, writer and founder of The Gate Theatre. His acting career started early as a child actor in London. As a young man he became fascinated with the Irish language and sought out and joined a London branch of the Gaelic League. He spent hours in Finchley Road Library reading Dineen’s Irish–English Dictionary, teaching himself excellent Irish. In 1928 he founded the Taibhdhearc Irish-speaking theatre in Galway, and its opening show was his dramatised version of Diarmuid agus Grainne. He toured Ireland as a actor with Anew McMaster's fit-up theatre company. In 1928 he founded The Gate Theatre with his partner Hilton Edwards. Under their guidance, the Gate offered Dublin audiences a first introduction to the world of European and American avant garde theatre as well as vibrant productions from the modern and classic Irish repertoire.
