SEARCH TIPS
General
Use the fields in the form to narrow your search. Only fill in that information that you deem necessary for your search. No field within the form is mandatory.
All search results are returned in the form of Play-Author or Adaptation/Translation -Adaptor/Translator.
If you do not know the full name of a Play, Author, Venue or Production Company, enter that portion of the name that you know. The Playography will return all plays containing this text.
For instance entering the word ‘gentlemen’ in the ‘Play Title’ field will return ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ in the search results. Similarly entering the word ‘Palace’ in the ‘Original Venue’ field will return all plays produced at the ‘The Everyman Palace Theatre’.
Cast Size
To search for a play with a cast of 4 people, you may enter 4 in the ‘Between’ Field and 4 in the ‘and’ field. Alternatively if you just enter 4 in the first field and leave the second field blank, the search will assume that you wish to search for plays with 4 people.
Searching for plays with a cast between 4 and 8 will return all plays with a cast of 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 people.
Cast searches can be further refined by searching on male and female cast member numbers if required.
Note: You may find that the cast numbers displayed for a play returned do not match the values you entered in your search. The cast numbers displayed on the play listing pages is the maximum cast for the play, however in some cases cast doubling is possible allowing for performance by a smaller cast. The casting notes displayed below the cast numbers on the play listing page normally includes this information.
Play Type
This section allows you to choose one play type to refine your search. Leave ‘All’ selected to return all plays regardless of type.
Acts
Acts allows you to define the number of acts in order to limit your search. Again Leave ‘All’ selected to return all plays regardless of number of acts.
Search by Subject Matter
Search by Subject Matter enables search by keyword or phrase: To search the synopsis, setting and title of a play for a specific word or phrase, enter the word or phrase in the text box provided. Otherwise you can also select from a pre-determined drop down list of alphabetically ordered themes.
Please note: The information contained in the Irish Playography is presented in as neutral and objective a manner as possible. Theatre Shop would caution all users that both searches Subject Matter searches are limited by design and, despite their obvious uses, do introduce a measure of subjectivity.
Downloadable and Published Scripts
The Irish Playography contains information on published scripts, if available, for all plays in the Playography database. In this section you can limit your search to only those plays that have published scripts by clicking this tick box.
Note: Many of the plays within the database do not have a published version but may have an unpublished version available through a contact point. This information is provided on the Additional Information page for each play.
Downloadable unpublished scripts are available for purchase online for certain scripts in the Irish Playography. You can limit your search to only return plays with downloadable scripts by clicking this tick box.
Translations
In this section you can select from a list of languages to limit your search to plays with translated scripts available in that language.
