Maura Laverty

1907 - 1966

Born in Rathangan, Co. Kildare, Laverty was educated at the Brigidine Convent, Carlow, where she studied teacher-training. She acted as governess and later secretary to Princess Bibesco in Spain. She became a foreign correspondent in Madrid. She returned to Ireland in 1928 and worked in Dublin as a journalist and broadcaster. Her novels include Never No More (1942), Touched by the Thorn (1943), No More than Human (1944), Lift Up Your Gates (1946). Her plays include Liffey Lane (1951) and Tolka Row (1951). Her collected fairy tales were published posthumously as The Queen of Aran’s Daughter (1995).
