ELMER RICE

1892 - 1967

Elmer Rice was a early 20th Century Amperican dramatist. His play The Adding Machine (1923) is generally considered to be the first American Expressionist play. His play Street Scene opened at the Playhouse Theatre in New York City in 1929 won the Pulitzer Prize and ran for a total of 601 performances. The Dublin Gate Theatre, having presented a successful production of The Adding Machine, secured the rights to Not For Children, prior to its New York premiere.
