EUGENE O'NEILL

1888 - 1953

Born in New York. After a failed marriage which produced a son, he worked as a gold prospector and as a seaman, while developing a lifelong affair with the bottle. Struck down by TB, he first nurtured ideas of becoming a playwright. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936 and Pulitzer Prizes for 4 of his plays.
