LIAM Ó BRIAIN

1888 - 1974

Born North Wall, Dublin he studied in Germany and in Paris. He lectured at UCD and was later appointed Professor of Romance languages in UCG (1917-59) He fought in 1916 and was imprisoned at Frongoch. His books include translations of La Bruyère, Henri Ghéon, Molière, Shakespeare, et al., including Anglo-Irish writers Gregory, Pearse, Synge translated into Irish for The Taibhdhearc in Galway of which he was a founding member with Mac Liammóir in 1928. Ó Briain translated numerous English, French and Italian dramas into Irish for production by An Taibhdearc.
