A County Down fishing village
William Finlay and his daughter-in-law Jane Anne Finlay await the return of Finlay's grandson Samuel James, feared lost at sea during a massive storm. As the storm rages, their worry mounts. Samuel eventually turns up, having landed some time earlier and got drunk, much to the disgust of his family.
